Penelope Roskell is a dedicated, inspiring teacher, as well as an acclaimed international concert pianist. She is Professor of Piano at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance (formerly Trinity College of Music) and also holds regular courses in London, including the Advanced Piano Courses and workshops on piano technique.

In addition to her work at Trinity, Penelope has also taught regular classes for postgraduates at the Royal Academy of Music, and is currently a visiting professor at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. She frequently gives masterclasses and lectures at conferences, conservatoires and summer schools, including Dartington International Summer School and Chethams International Summer School for Pianists. She has recently been invited to give masterclasses at the China Conservatory in Beijing.

She was inspired by a wide range of great teachers, including Guido Agosti, George Hadjinikos, Sir William Glock, Vlado Perlemuter and Maria Curcio.

She has a broad interest in a very wide range of repertoire, including contemporary. At Trinity, in addition to her piano teaching, she is involved in examining and auditioning and runs a regular class on piano pedagogy. From 2000 to 2002 she was also Director of the EPTA Piano Pedagogy Course.

Penelope has been a jury member on major piano competitions, including the BBC Young Musician of the Year.

Tension and injuries

Penelope has a special expertise in the field of piano technique and in dealing with physical tension and injuries. She is the Piano Trainer for the British Association of Performing Arts Medicine, giving workshops on healthy piano technique at various institutions. She was Director of the ISSTIP course in Musicians’ Health at Trinity in 2004 and is a frequent guest speaker on healthy piano technique at conferences and at music conservatoires. Her new book on all aspects piano playing will shortly be available in print and digital format, published by Edition Peters. Students will be able to work on sections of the book alongside one-to-one sessions in person or on skype.

Penelope has also made a DVD on “Yoga for Musicians”.

Piano Lessons

Penelope offers private lessons to individuals at her home in Stoke Newington, north-east London (normally lasting one hour and a half) at a time to suit. Penelope is open to giving lessons to foreign students on skype.


£90 for a lesson of 90 minutes.
